Frequently Asked Questions

Can I delay my cataract treatment?

Cataracts develop gradually and may not require surgery as long as your vision is not affected.
However, it is best to opt for early treatment, especially if the cataract interferes with your daily activities.
Do not wait until you lose your sight. Untreated cataracts can lead to blindness.

Will my health insurance cover the cost of cataract surgery?
Most insurance will cover the cost of cataract surgery. Kindly contact your insurance provider before surgery for additional information.
Can I have cataract surgery if I have other pre-existing eye conditions?
If you have other eye conditions, your ophthalmologist will discuss a treatment plan with you during the initial assessment. In some cases, you may require additional procedures before proceeding with cataract surgery.
What kind of cataract treatment is used at TESS?

Our preferred method of treatment is Phacoemulsification (Phaco). Phaco is regarded as the gold standard in cataract removal, with a high success rate.

Does cataract surgery hurt?

Cataract surgery is NOT painful. Before surgery, we administer numbing eye drops so you won’t feel any pain.

What should I do before cataract surgery?
  • Eat your meals and take your medication as per usual
  • Do not use heavy perfumes
  • Please arrange for a companion to bring you home
What to expect immediately after cataract surgery?
  • You will feel a little tired immediately after surgery.
  • Your vision will be blurry due to the anaesthesia used during surgery.
  • A protective eye shield will be placed over your eyes using surgical tape. This shield reduces risk of injury from accidental rubbing or bumping.
  • Some burning, stinging and/ or gritty feeling is normal.
  • Do not rub or put any pressure on your eye.
  • Please arrange for someone to take you home.
How quickly will my eyes recover after cataract surgery?

Cataract surgery recovery time tends to be minimal. Most patients are able to see well just a few days after cataract surgery.

You may notice that your vision is brighter for a few months after, as you get used to your improved vision.

We advise you to wear sunglasses during this period, to protect your eyes from glare and dust.
